Many are still indecisive about getting their own residential solar panels. They do not yet feel the need to switch into this seemingly new technology. Yet if they had made the decision early on, they could have saved a lot on energy bills, tapped on a renewable source of energy, and lastly, and perhaps most importantly-they could have made a whole lot of impact in the drive to save the earth.

This article will try to convince you that this alternative source of energy, solar panels, is the way to go.

Save Money On Your Energy Bill

One major reason why should install solar panels is because it will allow you to save more money. You will end up paying less electrical bills or bring it down to zero, if you have sourced your energy to 100% solar.

With such an alternative source, you will find yourself spending a lot less on energy bills and you will surely be glad as well, that these solar panels also offer a renewable supply.

Being renewable means you get the benefits of solar energy every month-year in and year out.

You will not find the supply lacking, as you depend only on the sun’s energy and use it to power the electrical appliances in your home.

Take Control Of Your Own Power

It comes from a natural source, thus you will find it in abundant supply with less harm done to the environment-than if you would have otherwise went for the traditional sources of electricity.

Be Green

You would leave less environmental footprints. You are not only enjoying the benefits of solar panels, you are also doing Earth a favor. With this as an alternative for your energy source, there is now less damage to the environment.

We can thus help in giving Earth the care it needs and giving it a chance to last for many more years.

How To Build Solar Panels

The 2003 northeast blackout affected 45M people in eight US states. For residents in the area who have alternative power sources such as solar panels, the party continued with no curfew. Lights, refrigerators, heating and air conditioning all continued to function properly. The US electrical grid is in dire straits according to a report by the Council on Foreign Relations last year, which means solar panels and alternative sources of energy are proving to be a much more secure option. Reducing your carbon footprint is one of the benefits of using solar panels, since solar electricity is considered “green” and emits no carbon dioxide (CO2) or other pollutants. Each home solar power system could save 2650 pounds of CO2 per year (30 tons over its lifetime). “The next industrial revolution will be based on these clean green technologies,” – Tony Juniper director of Friends of the Earth.

Your utility bills will be greatly reduced using solar energy (after all, sunlight is free); so although you’ll have an initial outlay, you’ll save money in the long term. Regular solar systems can incur substantial installation costs; however, government incentives are available.

Tax credits can be obtained from the federal government, for solar power, as per the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Psychological Every square meter of the surface of the earth receives around 164W of solar power. In fact, enough energy could be generated to supply the whole world with electricity just by covering one percent of the Sahara desert in solar panels. There’s so much more solar energy than we could ever use up, and that’s why it’s such an exciting option. The problem is, you can’t run a car or a TV with sunlight or heat. This is where solar panels come in – their job is converting solar power into a form of energy we can use – such as electricity. By connecting to the grid, people who create solar energy can be paid by the utilities for any extra electricity they produce. Accounting for a solar energy system’s electricity production and allowing homeowners to sell excess electricity back to the utilities, net metering is allowed in 30 states.

Click to Build your solar panel

A single, reversible meter is the one most often used. As electricity is produced by the solar energy system, on-site demand is fulfilled first. Rather than storing the excess energy in a battery, it is channeled instead, into the grid, reversing the electric meter. The utility company will credit the homeowner at the end of each metering period. You can store excess electricity for a cloudy day. There are two options for power on days without sunlight – if your home is attached to the national grid that can be your backup supply, otherwise you can store excess solar energy in batteries. Batteries are also used for night-time use. How many times a battery can be discharged and recharged is what determines whether it’s suitable for solar cells. The amount of electricity required, along with the size of battery will determine how long power will last during dark periods. How is solar electricity created? You’ll need a solar panel, which is composed of a number of solar cells. The solar cell absorbs some of the photons (light particles) from sunlight.

Each photon contains a bit energy when absorbed this power starts a means of releasing an electron inside the solar cell. As the photon is soaked up, electric wiring on either side of the cell enable a current to flow. In this way, the solar cell produces electricity, that may be used immediately, or stored inside a battery for future use. Solar cells are joined together to create solar panels. Because a single solar cell is unable to supply enough power for most purposes, they are attached to create solar panels. Solar panels can be found in many types and sizes, the most typical of which produce up to 50 Watts of electricity and consist of silicon solar cells. Solar panels can also be interconnected to be able to generate more energy. Solar panels are large flat, rectangular structures, roughly the size and shape of a door. Each panel is made of individual solar cells (power collectors) covered with glass. Each 8-sided cell is about the size of your palm, with a bluish-black color. Much like battery cells, solar cells are also developed to generate electricity. The difference is, solar cells use sunlight to create electricity, and not chemicals.

These cells are also known as photovoltaic cells. The process of producing electricity from solar panels is advanced technology, and yet quite simple to explain. When the sunlight shines onto a solar cell, photons (light particles) are bombarded onto the upper surface of the cell. This leads to the photon carrying its power down through the cell. The power is then received by electrons in the lower layer. The electrons use this power to cross the barrier to the upper layer and are able to exit into the circuit. And it is the electrons flowing through the circuit which supplies the power for our lights and appliances. Electricity generated using photovoltaic cells is not the only form of solar energy available. Solar-thermal panels are used to yield hot water instead of electricity.

Solar-thermal panels and solar panels have different methods of creating solar power – there’s no electricity when using solar-thermal panels. Both panels look alike; however, where photovoltaic panels soak up light particles into solar cells, solar thermal panels capture heat through a sheet of black glass. Water is heated as it trickles by means of the panels, after which it is lead into the home water system. The entire world uses less power in a year than the sun transmits to the earth’s surface in just sixty minutes. Designing (or redesigning) your house to make the most of sunlight and heat is using passive solar power. Two ways to benefit from the sun’s heat: add another south-facing window and more insulation to your roof – this will increase the amount of heat and make it last longer. These ‘passive’ elements can be added during the building of a house or during major refurbishment. Adding solar panels would be called active solar power. Many people believe that you need continuous sunlight for a solar panel to work, whereas in fact, solar panels convert any form of light that hits them, and will still be effective even on gray days. For overnight energy you have one of two options. Remaining connected to your regular electric supplier means that whenever your solar panels are not working (for example at night), your energy is drawn from the supplier.

Or, you can set your solar energy system up to store add-on electricity produced by the panels during the day, in batteries, and these can provide any energy you need after dark. Free, renewable power sources should become more essential as oil reserves decrease and global warming rises. Of all alternative energy sources available, the solar energy system has become the most popular since it is silent and produces no pollutants. The most common practice is to fit photovoltaic panels while continuing to be connected to the electric grid. The energy generated by the solar panels is then used by the owner, and any surplus is directed into the grid. This means not only will you be able to draw on the grid after dark when your panels are not capturing sunlight, but you can also be remunerated for the extra electricity you create. Water solar systems are efficient in lowering water bills by at least 50% and up to 70%. Apart from the environmental benefits of solar power, the fiscal benefits make it worth the effort.

Click to Build your solar panel

Even more can be saved by utilizing both solar water panels and PV panels. Solar technology grants are on hand to help fund the considerable initial installation costs of a solar power system. DIY solar panels are starting to become more prevalent as people recognize the difference in set-up costs. Fossil fuel sources are becoming more expensive and providing more difficulty, resulting in more worth being placed on solar energy. As pollution and global warming intensify, conventional energy sources are no longer a viable option. Renewable power sources, by definition, are limitless, unlike fossil fuel. As time progresses, the continued upgrades made to solar technology, along with rising prices associated with traditional energy supplies will result in solar power becoming more inexpensive.

Daryl Hannah and Orlando Bloom are among a growing group of stars committed to doing more for the environment than just recycling and driving hybrid cars. These superstars have switched to using solar panels and other renewable energy sources in their homes, reducing their energy use. Johnny Depp (“Pirates of the Caribbean”) is preparing to have his island in the Bahamas powered completely by solar power instead of generators. Larry Hagman (best known for his portrayal of JR in “Dallas”) is the proud owner of one of the biggest residential solar power systems in America, reducing his electric bill from $ 37,000 to $ 13,000 per year. The BP Solar Neighbors program – brainchild of A-list actor, Edward Norton helps low income households to benefit from solar energy systems. Through the BP Solar Neighbors project, for every solar power system sold to a famous person, BP donates one to a low income family. Brad Pitt, Alicia Silverstone and Rhea Pearlman are just three of the many stars who have taken part in this project.

This project could possibly be contributing to the 30% annual growth of BP’s solar division. Global energy company Shell has forecasted that within the next thirty years, around half of our planet’s power will be sourced from renewable power options. General Electric and Total are just two of the major corporations joining Shell in a joint sustainable energy project. A compelling spotlight has been focused on the demand for sustainable energy sources following the recent BP oil spill. Focus on renewable power and solar technology in particular, has increased following the significant consequences of the oil spill. The statistics for global power use are interesting, and may be unexpected to some. Over 25% of worldwide energy usage is consumed by America, despite accounting for barely 5% of the global population. Not only will Israel’s 100mw solar energy plant supply over 200,000 people with electricity, but they are preparing to develop a second plant which, at 500mw will have an even bigger impact. Japan uses fifty percent of all solar panels created throughout the world, and Bavaria contains the world’s biggest solar electricity system. Taking all of this into consideration, America has huge promise regarding solar energy. By powering your house with solar panels, it is possible to save money in 2 ways.

Using solar power firstly means lower electricity bills. Secondly, the utility company will compensate you for the excess electricity your panels create if you remain connected to the grid. The average solar system takes about 18 months to have made up for the installation costs; making your own solar panels would mean you’re saving from the beginning. Recently, a rise in home-owners making their own solar panels demonstrates that people have found a way to get past the high investment needed for installation. With solar system installation costs still very high (between $ 7,000 and $ 40,000 for the typical American home), DIY solar panels have become more popular. Many people find they’re easier and less complicated than they may have thought.

Following the right instruction guide will ensure safe and effective DIY solar panels. Going with the DIY solar panel option means not just long-term utility bill savings, but it’s a way to save cash in the thousands in initial outlay. The worth of a home can be increased with the addition of a solar power system. The US Dept of Housing and Urban Development has reported that a home’s property value increases by $ 20,000 for every $ 1,000 annual utility bill savings. Energy efficiency is an attractive benefit to a possible buyer of your home. Apart from the long-term savings to a potential home-owner, a solar system means independence from the grid, providing more security.

Unlike neighboring houses still relying on the utility company, a solar-powered house will continue to run as normal – a benefit which is reflected in its value. Many people believe that if they don’t use a south-facing roof their solar panels will not work, but in fact they will still prove efficient on a roof that faces east or west. Another choice which is very effective is a ground-mounted system – constructed in a flat area with no shade. The ground-mounted solar panel is built by fixing it to a pole which is cemented into the ground. If you’re not connected to the grid, you can arrange for your solar system to store excess electricity in batteries – which will then provide your night-time energy.

Global warming and environmental degradation have raised concerns all over the world throughout and in recent times. Talks of utilizing alternative or renewable sources of energy are doing the rounds to conserve energy for the future generations. The most widely and easily available and accessible source of renewable energy is the sun. Solar energy is cheap, easy to capture and store and also put to use everywhere as a supplement of electricity. Solar power is essentially stored or converted directly into photovoltaic cells or concentrated. Solar energy is used for lighting, cooking, and several other purposes.

Solar fuelled products and equipments like solar panels, solar heater, cells, and lights are found in nearby home appliances or solar panel stores. Solar panels are at disposal in these stores and in different varieties, from 50Watts to 125 Watts and even 130Watts. They are composed of a mixture of number of cells. They can be operated with the help of battery or may function simply from the charge it receives via solar rays. The products can be purchased from the omnipresent solar panel stores or may be ordered online from the website. However placing an order by visiting the stores will be viable as the prices keep on changing and one may also choose from an array of products which are not on display on the website. The solar panel stores also offer discounts on certain products.

As stated above solar panel store are multiplying in number and their popularity is increasing with demands to use solar panels rather than electricity. Solar panels can be fixed with the help of manuals or instructions from the website without seeking professional help. Battery packs, mounting kits are available in the solar panel store which can be bought and fitted with the help of a local electrician. Solar panel can be utilized in several ways, say large panels installed in RV or small panels fitted in garden water pumps or lighting of the deck. Solar panel store are always answering queries and providing feedback regarding the use of solar power and panels.

States in the west are actively encouraging and imposing laws to install solar panels in all state buildings to save electricity. The benefit of using solar power is it can be stored for a considerable amount of period with the help of battery and almost requires no maintenance. Solar panel store endorse those products which can endure and survive in the worst weather. The store also provides customer support service during and after the purchase has been made.

Some solar panels which are available in the stores are Lumos LS185 Black frame, Solar land 85W 12V, Suntech 10W and many more. Solar cells, solar array, junction box, combiner box, charge controller, Amp hour meter, sealed and flooded batteries are some of the products used as a renewable source of energy. They come with a warranty and rebate. But the tax credit is also attached to the products. Despite the limitations solar panel store selling these products are becoming omnipotent each passing day.

Diy solar panel is not that difficult at all. Anyone can do it with the right knowledge. Why pay for solar power companies to install solar panels while you can build it yourself?

To diy solar panel, you will need some simple tools like saw, screw driver and drill. You will also need silicone caulk and wood glue. For the wiring, you will need wire cutters, wire strippers, a soldering iron and solder. All these tools are cheap and can be bought at your nearby stores.

The main component of a solar panel is solar cells. You can buy second-hand solar cells if you are with low budget. You can try to buy them on internet. But you better buy from famous online store with better reputation so that you would not buy cells of low quality. Buy solar cells that are pre-tabbed. The price of these cells are a bit higher but it does worth as you will do much less work on wiring.

You will need some materials to make the container.

Wood is my favorite as it is cheap and easy to obtain. You can easily get it for free. Making the case is very easy. Just make sure the size is correct.

After you’ve completed the container, glue the cells on it and wire them together. If cells you bought are not pre-tabbed, you will have to solder them together because glue them to the container. You may need to attach a diode to the panel to prevent the loss of energy of the batteries during night. If you plan to use a charge controller then there is no need to use diode. After using some silicone caulk to glue the cells into the wood container, test it with voltmeter. If everything works right, oh you just completed a solar panel.

All the knowledge I know about diy solar panel is from a diy guide.

This guide is very comprehensive and with video tutorials. I could not have completed a solar panel without the step-by-step instruction from this guide. It also gave me the idea of how to obtain cheap materials to build my solar panel with less than $ 200.The guide has instruction on diy wind generators too. If you have little knowledge but want to make power at home, I strongly recommend this guide to you.

Solar panels are large flat, rectangular structures, between the size of a radiator and a door. A protective sheet of glass covers the solar cells (power collectors) which make up a solar panel. A solar cell is usually 8-sided and blue-black in color, about the size of your palm. Similar to the way the cells in a battery are developed to generate power, so these cells are designed to produce electricity. However, they create electricity from sunlight instead of from chemicals. Solar panels are also known as photovoltaic panels (or PV panels), which comes from a combination of the Greek word for light, and electricity pioneer Alessandro Volta. Global power usage figures are remarkable – and surprising. Although the US represents only 5% of the global population, it utilizes over a quarter of the power consumed by the entire planet. Over 200,000 people in Israel will take delivery of their electricity from a 100mw solar energy plant, with plans to take their solar potential further, developing a 500mw plant.

Bavaria houses the world’s biggest solar energy system, while Japan uses half of all solar panels manufactured worldwide. Considering these facts, the US has a fairly long way to go to begin making the most of the huge potential of solar energy. In just one hour the sun transfers more power to the crust of the earth than the entire world can use in a year. By designing your home to make the most of the sun’s heat and light, you can use passive solar energy. Two ways to make the most of the sun’s heat: add another south-facing window and more insulation to your roof – this will add to the amount of heat and make it last longer. Any “passive” adjustments like these would be installed either when the house is initially built, or during major refurbishment. Installing a solar panel to collect sunlight and change it to electricity would be active solar energy. It is becoming more necessary than ever to strengthen our dependence on natural, renewable energy sources as an alternative to dwindling fossil fuels. The renewable power produced by solar energy systems has become the most widespread due to the silent, pollutant free process. Most people stay connected to the grid and add photovoltaic panels (solar panels) to their properties. Any electricity that is left unused is then lead into the electricity grid. In this way you can get compensated for the surplus power you supply. Although many individuals are under the impression you should use a south-facing roof in order to benefit from solar panels, in fact they will still work with an east/west facing roof. An alternative would be to construct a ground-mounted system, in an un-shaded, flat area. A pole, cemented into the ground holds the solar panel in place. If you’re linked to the grid, it can provide your overnight power; if not, you can set up your system to charge batteries during the day with any excess electricity, and those will provide your energy overnight. Recently, an increase in home-owners making their own solar panels shows that people have found a way to get past the high investment needed for installation. DIY solar panels mean a massive saving on the $ 7,000 to $ 40,000 installation costs. And it is easier than it may seem. For safe and effective DIY solar panels it’s important to use the right instruction guide. Combining the long-term savings in lower utility bills, with thousands of dollars saved on installation means that DIY solar panels are an even bigger financial success. Reducing your carbon emissions is one of the benefits of using solar panels, since solar electricity is considered “green” and emits no carbon dioxide (CO2) or other pollutants. A home solar power system could save 2650 lb of CO2 per annum – which is around 30 tons over the lifetime of the system. “The next industrial revolution will be based on these clean green technologies,” – Tony Juniper, director, Friends of the Earth.

How would you like to have your very own DIY Solar Panel heater? By constructing and installing solar panels at your home, you can significantly reduce your monthly electric bill and at the same time set an example for other people in your neighbourghood who are not so ecologically concious. This is very easy project and possible for anybody to do, no matter what experience you have at DIY projects.

Ingenious solution shown on the site http://solar.freeonplate.com/en/ served as an inspiration to build efficient “home-made” solar collector. Basically, it is incredibly simple and cheap solar panel for supplemental home heating, which heats the air directly. The most interesting thing is the fact that solar panel is almost entirely constructed out of empty beer and soda aluminum cans!

Housing for solar collector is made of wood (plywood 15mm), while its front is made out of 3 mm (0.12 inches) Plexiglas / polycarbonate (you can use tempered glass as well).

The back of the case set is made of rock wool (you can use Styrofoam) as insulation.
Solar absorber is made of beer / soda cans, and painted in matte-black paint resistant to high temperature. The upper part (cover) of cans is specifically designed to provide greater efficiency in heat exchange between the cans and the passing air.
When it is sunny, regardless of outside temperature, cans and inside air heat up very quickly. Small fan drives heated air back into the room.
Our solar system is not able to accumulate thermal energy it produces. When it’s sunny, the solar panel produces heat, but it is necessary to use it immediately for heating the air inside the house. If the sun does not shine, it is necessary to interrupt the supply of air in the solar collector, because otherwise the room will begin to cool down. This can be solved in a simple way – by installing the valve, which will reduce the heat loss to a minimum.
Small differential thermostat (snap disk) controls the fan. This thermostat can be bought in better-equipped electronic component stores. The unit has two sensors. One placed inside the top opening for warm air, the other inside the lower opening for the supply of cold air in the solar collector.
If you set the temperatures carefully, the solar collector can produce an average of 2 kW of energy for home heating. This generally depends on how much sun do you have during the day.
Dress rehearsal of solar collector was carried out in the backyard before installing the system on the house. It was a sunny winter day, no clouds. A small cooler extracted from a faulty PC power supply was used as a fan. After 10 minutes in the sun, solar collector produced hot air with temperature above 70 ° C!
The test results have encouraged us to install solar heater on the house as soon as possible.
After completing installation of solar panel, the outside temperature was -3 ° C, and from the solar collector was coming out 3 m3/min (3 cubic meters per minute) of heated air. In the home version we used more powerful fan than for the test. Heated air temperature went up to +72 ° C. Temperature was measured by digital thermometer.
Calculated power that the solar panel produced, was approximately 1950 W (watts) which is almost 3 HP (3 horsepower)!!!

CONCLUSION: Considering that the results were quite satisfactory, we can conclude that this DIY solar panel is definitely worth making. The collector, at the very least, costs under 150$ and can be used for additional heating of our home, and it is up to you to calculate and figure out how much savings you can achieve.

If you have considered installing solar panels on your home in order to reduce your electrical costs, you are certainly not alone. Solar energy is quickly becoming one of the most popular ways to power your home, but it does come with a hefty price tag. Even with the incentives offered by the federal government and by some states and cities, solar power may still be out of reach for many homeowners. Is there a way to get cheap solar panels? Yes, there certainly is.

Build Your Own Solar Panels

It’s much easier than you might think and you don’t need to be an all-star handyman to get it done. Pre-made solar panels will cost $ 10-$ 12 for each watt of electricity they produce. On the average home, the cost for solar panels to power the house will run over $ 20,000. If this is not what you are prepared to spend, then you should consider building your own.

You can run a small shop or garage, or even a small appliance, with one solar panel that costs about $ 200 to build.

Here’s What You Need

1. Plywood, Sheets of Glass, and Copper Wire: All of this can be purchased at your local home improvement or hardware store.

2. Photovoltaic Cells: These are the solar cells and you can find them at local dealers in your area or order online.

3. A Detailed Manual: This is probably one of the most important things you can buy. Try to find one that has a video with it. It’s always easier to learn from a video than from pictures. Don’t skimp here. Your manual will be handy for years to come.

4. A Weekend’s Time: You can build cheap solar panels for your home over the course of a weekend. Once you finish your first one, you should be able to build one in a day’s time.

It really is that simple to build your own solar panel.

You can build the size of panel you need for the space you have available. You’ll see a difference in your electrical bill and you can even wire the panels together for more power. If you are searching for cheap solar panels, then this could be your answer.

Isn’t it time you quit paying the utility company so much money?

You can save yourself time and literally thousands of dollars by looking over a review of sites that offer guides to making solar panels and by using our online guide (no need to sign up) to learn other practical ways to save money.
